The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes was inspired by the Jack the Ripper murders. An older couple, the Buntings, are forced to take in lodgers to make ends meet. They are on the verge of starvation when a mysterious man, Mr. Sleuth, appears at their door and asks for lodging, paying in advance. However, when the murders of young women in London attributed to a man known only as “The Avenger” continue, the Buntings, particularly Mrs. Bunting, grow fearful that their lodger may be the murderer.
beautifully read but horrible that they knew mr. Seuth was the murderer and just let him keep murdering. makes no sense to me.
I agree with other reviewers in that there was no mystery to hold your attention as the book progresses. As well, the recorder was not pronouncing words correctly which becomes very distracting, very quickly.
The reader was excellent but the book didn't manage to fascinate me. I expected an utterly captivating plot due to the fact that the book is based on the murders of Jack the ripper. There was no mystery to be discovered since the reader understands from the beggining what is going on with the lodger. However the book was brilliantly recorded and thus easy to follow.
